One fine backcountry day, I dug a perfect snow pit. Before I could go to work poking at the layers, my buddy Eric insisted that I forgot something. He grabbed the shovel and proceeded to dig a ledge into the sidewall. I was confused until he grabbed my field book and carefully placed it on the snowy shelf.
